Juvederm®

Juvederm®

There have been many generations of hyalorunic acid over the last decade that have come and gone. Dr. Dadurian’s favorite is Juvederm®. Juvederm is an FDA approved facial filler that comes in two thicknesses; Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC. Juvederm is a soft, pliable gel made of cross linked hyaluronic acid. It is a man made hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a very natural substance, in fact, our joint fluid consists of hyaluronic acid. Dr. Dadurian prefers Juvederm to other hyaluronic acids, because it causes less bruising and swelling and lasts longer, in fact it lasts about a year, where others last up to 6 months. The most desirable feature of hyaluronic acid is that it fills in very naturally without forming lumps and bumps. Some people also find it comforting that should they not like the results, hyaluronic acid can be dissolved very easily with an enzyme, hyaluronidase, that upon injection breaks down hyaluronic acid over about 2 hours, thereby completely reversing undesirable results. Adverse reactions are very rare.

What is the difference between Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC?

Both types of Juvederm are used to fill in wrinkles, lines and depressions on the face, as lip injections, and sometimes on other parts of the body, even the hands. Juvederm Ultra XC is used for filling in nasolabial folds (the lines from the nose down to the corners of the mouth) or marionette lines (the puppet lines going down from the corners of the mouth). Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is a little thicker and therefore more volumizing. Dr. Dadurian many times prefers Ultra plus for lip injections for a more “voluptuous” yet very natural look. It is important to mention that both types of Juvederm contain lidocaine which makes the actual injection process much more comfortable.
