What is Laser Tattoo Removal?

Tattoos are a form of body modification, involving pictures or words being inserted into the dermis layer of the skin with indelible ink. The ink changes the pigment of the skin and can fade over time but is a permanent fixture in the skin. There are several reasons why men and women want their tattoos removed over time, but the only way to do it safely and permanently is with laser tattoo removal.

Just as laser therapy can correct hyperpigmentation or dark spots on the skin associated with aging, lasers can also break up tattoo ink and remove it from the skin. Using beams of controlled energy, the laser is administered directly onto the tattoo. Advances in this technology have made it more effective and comfortable for patients, and it is typically a well-tolerated treatment.

While black tattoos absorb all wavelengths of laser light, colored tattoos may require different lasers and may take more effort to remove. The type of lasers used may also depend on the extent to which the tattoo ink extends underneath the skin.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Tattoo Removal?

While advanced laser technology can remove most tattoos, each case will be evaluated individually and a customized treatment plan will be created by Dr. Dadurian to fit your skin type, condition and tattoo specifications. Tattoos that have been treated unsuccessfully with other methods may also qualify, depending on the individual.

The number of sessions required to completely remove the tattoo will depend on the color and size of the tattoo. Doctor Dadurian will discuss your treatment options with you during your consultation.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Laser tattoo removal is often described as akin to feeling grease splatter or a light snapping of a rubber band against the skin. Discomfort after treatment is minimal, but any soreness of the treated area is easily soothed with an ice pack. Risks of permanent pigmentation change and scarring are possible with this procedure, but lasers that are appropriate for your skin type and condition will be used to minimize this risk.
