Permanent make-up is a type of cosmetic tattooing. The esthetician uses techniques akin to those used in tattooing to make the client appear to be wearing make-up. There are a variety of possible procedures, including some that mimic the effects of eyeliner, lip stick and mascara.
What Does the Application Process Involve?
The process is similar to tattooing, and it is sometimes called “micropigmentation.” The esthetician will use a special tool to implant granules of pigment under the surface of the skin. They can administer a topical anesthetic beforehand to ensure patient comfort.
Like a tattoo artist, the esthetician will use a sterile device to inject the pigment into the skin. The procedure can take 30 to 120 minutes. As with a regular tattoo, the color will initially seem very bright and/or dark. It will gradually fade over time.
The client will have to consult with our esthetician beforehand. They may also have to return for periodic check-ups after the treatment, so the esthetician can evaluate the healing process.
Who Would Want Permanent Make-Up?
While permanent make-up may sound like something that appeals to the lazy and impatient, there are people who could actually benefit. For example, people with vision problems might want permanent make-up.
People with conditions that impair their eye-hand coordination might also benefit from permanent make-up. Such clients can include people with multiple sclerosis, stroke, arthritis or Parkinson’s disease.
Permanent make-up may also benefit people who have allergies or skin sensitivities that prevent them from being able to wear conventional make-up. These individuals should be careful, though, for some kinds of permanent make-up can trigger allergic reactions. Pigments made from iron oxide are the safest.
Who is a Good Candidate for Permanent Make-Up?
The ideal candidate will be an adult in good overall health who has realistic expectations and understands the risks. People with an active skin infection, rash, acne or similar skin problem need to wait for the condition to clear up before getting permanent make-up.
