Although Acne is most commonly associated with teenagers and puberty, it can develop at any age. People in their 20s and 30s often struggle with the symptoms of Acne as well, particularly the appearance of blemishes and scars that result from the presence of bacteria on the skin. One of the newest and most effective treatments for Acne is phototherapy. Unlike creams, salves, and cleansers, light waves can actually kill Acne-forming bacteria at the source without irritating the skin. At Daniela Dadurian, M.D., we use the revolutionary Blu-U® light therapy for Acne treatment.

How Light Can Kill Bacteria

Acne is a condition caused by the blockage of pores in the skin. Dead skin, cellular debris and oils can clog pores and make it difficult for the skin to breathe. Antibiotics are available that can help reduce the amount of bacteria living in skin pores, but many individuals are wary of any type of medication due to possible side effects. Light therapy is a safe, non-invasive alternative.

The Blu-U® treatment uses specialized blue light to penetrate the pores on the face and neck. The device looks like a screen monitor and contains photo cells that direct blue light in a singular direction. The patient sits close to the screen with protective eyewear, and the face is bathed in the blue light.

The light actually kills the P. acnes bacteria living in the skin pores, reducing the inflammation and swelling that exacerbate breakouts. When the bacteria is killed, the body responds by sending less fluid to the trouble site. The amount of scar tissue that encases the bacteria is significantly reduced as well, effectively clearing up the skin.

How the Sessions Are Scheduled

Most sessions last about 15-20 minutes. We may recommend two or three sessions per week, for a total duration of about three months. Most patients report a reduction in acne symptoms within three weeks, although results may vary. Each patient is different, so after your consultation, we’ll create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

The light penetrates into the pores and works exclusively on the P. acnes bacteria. No skin tissue or underlying material is affected by the light. This is a completely non-invasive, medically approved treatment for acne.

No major side effects have been reported by treated patients. Because the light is comprised of shortwave radiation, it carries very little heat energy. This ensures that the skin does not become burned or damaged.

Control Acne with Phototherapy

Many of the creams and salves on the market can help keep facial skin clean, but they do little to get rid of the bacteria that exists in the pores. Damaged pores often close up and are extremely difficult to clean. This is because the presence of bacteria signals a response from the body’s natural defense systems. Fluids, scar tissue, and antibodies are sent to the problem area, but this may actually swell up the pore and cause it to close. Our use of the Blu-U® treatment has been shown to be an effective alternative, without the risks associated with antibiotics or other medicines.

At Daniela Dadurian, M.D., we are always looking for the most advanced technologies to treat your skin concerns. Contact us today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Dadurian and find out if Blu-U® treatment can reduce the appearance of your Acne.
